Harry Bertoia left Italy at the age of 15, to study sculpture at the Technology Institute of Detroit. In 1937 is already a teacher at the Detroit School of Arts and Crafts and to the Cranbrook Academy of Arts. Born as a painter and a sculptor, he has worked in several fields using different materials. He also is very famous for his furniture design, particularly the wire chair. Bertoia states that his design is intended to create space which is more pleasurable and diversified thanks to the process of combining technical work with creative art. " Space permeates them" he said of his chairs " if you look at them carefully you can see that the're made mainly of air such as a sculpture".
