Wagenfeld's career and work testify to his origins as a craftsman. In a way, he is the archetype of modern artisan who menaged to fit in with the industrial system. Not surprisingly his name is closely linked to the Bauhaus in Weimar.
Wagenfeld studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule in his native town of Bremen, before embarking his apprenditiceship as a silversmith. His nexr step was to enter the metalwork laboratory of the Bauhaus, run by Moholy-Nagy. First a student in 1923, Wagenfeld became an assistant in 1926 and a teacher in 1929. In the ensuing years  he began working in industry. After the war, he moved to Berlin where he taught industrial design. He also produced his own finished designs in metal.
