Stam’s fame as a designer derives almost exclusively from his invention  of a chair of unparalleled lightness and semplicity. Stam first built as a prototype for his wife, using pieces of gas tubingand elbow joints. In the space of a few weeks (1926), when Stam had shown his ideata the Stuttgart exibition, Mies van der Rohe and Marcel Breuer came out with  cantilevered chairs of their own, improving on Stam’s original idea, which included a crossbar between the front verticals. This the version with armrests, conceived by Stam and integrated with adjustmentsby Marcel Breuer. It’s one of the most widely used chairs in the world.
